What is wrong with people?

On Saturday, Emergency Crews were called to a structure fire and the response was in textbook fashion. Arrriving at the scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames and the structure itself was not salvagable. Putting out the fire as quickly as could be accomplished so that scene investigators could perform their duties, it was shocking to see that two bodies were found inside the burned out structure. Scene responders who witnessed this now have to struggle wiht how such a tragedy could have happened. What is suspected is that the father of the children set fire to the house and then he left the county in an attempt to escape. How could a father in a state of anger and rage do such a thing to his children? How can any human be so cruel? Throughout my career in Emergency Medicine, I have witnessed many trauma's and death but this particular scene again makes we wonder, What is wrong with people? What happened to the value that we have for human life? What happened to the fear of what we may have to answer to in the after life? This call made me come home to hug my ten year old daughter and to say, "Daddy loves you". I can only hope that throughout her life, that she is safe and that she lives a healthy, happy long life helping others around her. For me, this call makes me appreciate each day of life and I will strive the be the besst person that I can be.

  1. I have often wondered this very same question. I always tell everyone. I must have lived a sheltered life because I didn't know that people acted the way they do until I got a job when I was fifteen. Some people are just cruel and rude these days! The real problem is that people stopped caring a long time ago. I really believe this. If you care about something/someone you are going to do everything in your power to protect it or them. People just think that everything and everyone are easily replaced now and they don't care. I cannot imagine what was running through that father's head. What a horrible person. That would absolutely break my heart. It definitely teaches us lessons as witnesses, doesn't it? It sure makes me appreciate life when I hear stories like this. I'm lucky to have such loving, caring parents.

  2. I have to say that my religion kicks in here. I think so highly of why the Sabbath was made. A time to focus on one's mentallity should be a requirement, in my opinion. Evil exists. If one contemplates the true essence of the word evil in etymology, then one would understand the true horrors of it. E or i-fear as in eeks vil or will-the will or choice of an individual. Evil is the choosing of wrong doing. This is the scarriest thing that I have ever known. This is an act that any is capable of giving wisdom to act out in such. People need to keep their thoughts in check. "Be careful little minds what you think."

  3. This can be a very cruel world in which we live in and it does seem to be getting worse all the time. There are also good people in this world who will stand up against the evil and wrong doings if they have a chance. "Whats wrong with people" reminds me of William Faulkner's story about Barn Burning. How the man had no respect for anyone not even his family. The people tried to get what they deserved and took the man to the Justice of the peace, but it only made the situation worse. The man was presented in front of the judge then afterwards he would burn the barn of the people who turned him in. I am thankful for all the good people in this world and try to constantly pray, pray , pray for the bad.
